Your hosts

Adele Walsh is a passionate advocate for writing and reading for young people.

She has a professional background as a teacher and now works as the Program Coordinator for the Centre for Youth Literature, providing online content as well as programming events to promote literature for, and to, young adults.

Adele is a member of the Melbourne Writers Festival Schools Advisory Committee and the Express Media board. In 2015 she was announced as a Melbourne City of Literature travel grant recipient enabling her to observe a range of youth literature programming in the US.

Adele has chaired and appeared in sessions at Melbourne Writers Festival, Sydney Writers’ Festival, the Emerging Writers Festival, NSW Writers Centre, Teen Author Carnival (US), Australian Romance Readers Conference, and Express Media.

Once upon a time, she was a well-known youth literature blogger, Persnickety Snark. However, these days she is is never persnickety and always snarky.

Kelly Gardiner is a writer, editor and educator.

Her latest book is 1917, a novel in Scholastic’s ‘Australia’s Great War’ series for young readers.

Her previous books include Goddess, based on the life of the swordswoman, cross-dresser and opera singer, Mademoiselle de Maupin, and two historical novels for young adults –The Sultan’s Eyes and Act of Faith. Both YA books were shortlisted for the Ethel Turner Prize in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and were Children’s Book Council of Australia Notable Books. The Sultan’s Eyes was selected by the International Youth Library as one of the  world’s most important YA novels of 2014.

Her books for younger readers are the ‘Swashbuckler’ adventure trilogy – Ocean Without End, The Pirate’s Revenge and The Silver Swan – and a picture book, Billabong Bill’s Bushfire Christmas. 

Kelly has edited newspapers, magazines and websites. Her travel writing, reviews, features and interviews have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Marie Claire, Next, New Idea and Sunday Star Times. Her poetry has appeared in Southerly and Going Down Swinging.

Her academic writing has appeared in journals such as Text and the Australian Journal of Crime Fiction, and her research interests include women’s writing (natch), queer literary history, historical and biofiction, and female characters in literature.

She teaches creative writing at La Trobe University and digital literacy at State Library Victoria.
